The Mediterranean Sea set a new record as it reached its highest temperature, Monday, during the fierce heatwave that hit the region, Spanish researchers told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Tuesday, July 25.
The new record temperature hit 28.71ᵒC, according to the Spanish Institute of Marine Sciences.
Institute of Marine Sciences said: "We attained a new record... in the daily median sea surface temperature of the Mediterranean: 28.71ᵒC."
It added: "The last record was in August 23, 2003 with a median value of 28.25ᵒC," it added.
Those results are not confirmed by the European Union's Copernicus Earth observation program.
Those high temperatures are threatening marine life in the Mediterranean, and about 50 species were hurt between 2015, and 2019.
