Reports from Spanish media suggest that a major overhaul could take place at Real Madrid this summer following a noticeable decline in the team’s performances and results this season.
The club recently dismissed head coach Xabi Alonso after only about six months in charge. Youth team coach Álvaro Arbeloa was appointed as interim manager, but results have not significantly improved.
Despite the instability, Real Madrid currently sit second in the La Liga standings with 63 points, four points behind leaders FC Barcelona, who have taken advantage of the Madrid side’s recent slip ups.
In Europe, Real Madrid advanced to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League after a difficult playoff victory over SL Benfica. They also secured an impressive 3–0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their knockout tie.
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, tensions have been rising within the club’s top management, prompting discussions about major structural changes aimed at correcting the club’s sporting direction.
Club president Florentino Pérez reportedly believes the club failed to ensure the success of Xabi Alonso as head coach, while the team’s overall performances have remained inconsistent despite still competing for both La Liga and Champions League titles.
The potential shake up could affect several key figures close to the president, including José Ángel Sánchez, the executive responsible for sporting operations and the first team.
The club is also reportedly considering parting ways with chief scout Juni Calafat, who famously discovered Brazilian stars Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo.
Another senior adviser to the president, Enas Al Ghari, could also leave as the club looks to introduce a new administrative structure capable of guiding the team back to major trophies.
The upcoming summer transfer window is expected to include the search for a new permanent head coach. Arbeloa’s only chance of keeping the job would be leading the club to their 16th Champions League title.
Two main candidates have reportedly emerged for the role. One is former Liverpool FC manager Jürgen Klopp, who currently works in a sporting role within the Red Bull football network.
The other is Mauricio Pochettino, the current head coach of the United States men's national soccer team.
