The US state of Maine ruled Thursday that former President Donald Trump is ineligible to run in the ballot for the 2024 presidential election.

The Maine secretary of state, Democratic Shenna Lee Bellows, said in a statement that Trump is “unqualified for the office of president” under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which excludes anyone who participated in acts of “rebellion” from assuming any public responsibility.

This decision comes a week after a similar decision taken by the Supreme Court in Colorado against the backdrop of a crowd of his supporters storming the Congress headquarters in 2021.

Meantime, the Supreme Court in Michigan announced, last Wednesday, its refusal to exclude former US President Donald Trump from running in the Republican Party primaries in the state.

The New York Times reported earlier that lawsuits were filed in at least 16 states demanding that former US President Donald Trump be prevented from participating voluntarily in the presidential primary elections.
