Commenting on the ongoing debate in the United Nations Security Council regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Wednesday that officials in Washington are in frequent contacts with the Palestinian Authority.
Abbas added - in an interview with the Russian "TASS" agency, after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin - that the Security Council had put forward a ceasefire resolution since last October 7 to be voted on three times. This decision is necessary from both a legal and humanitarian standpoint, but the United States opposed the ceasefire because it uses its veto power every time.
He continued: "The United Nations failed, due to pressure from the United States, in its mission of guaranteeing the rights of the Palestinian people and establishing the Palestinian state."
Abbas arrived in Moscow yesterday, Monday, on a visit that continues until today. He is then scheduled to leave for Türkiye, to hold talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
