The British University in Egypt has appointed renowned Egyptian-British heart surgeon Magdi Yacoub as its first honorary president.
Hala El-Said, the minister of planning and economic development, stated during the official opening that Sir Magdi serves as a bridge between Egypt and the outside world and as a symbol for millions of people everywhere.
Yacoub, 87, founded the Magdi Yacoub Institute at the Harefield Heart Science Centre and is a professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Imperial College London.
The Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation, founded in 2008 to offer free medical treatments to the underprivileged and to provide training in science, medicine, and nursing, is likewise named after the renowned surgeon.
