According to Igor Karpenko, Chair of the Central Election Commission, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is leading the preliminary results of the country’s presidential election.
Russia Today reported Lukashenko secured 86.82% of the vote based on data from regional election committees.
Sergei Sirankov, First Deputy of the Central Committee of the Belarusian Communist Party, gained 3% of the votes so far.
Three other candidates contested the presidency: Oleg Gaidukevich, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party; Alexander Khizhnjak, leader of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice; and Anna Kanopatskaya, an independent entrepreneur and former candidate in the previous election.
The Central Election Commission reported a final voter turnout of 85.70%, slightly higher than the 84.3% recorded in the 2020 presidential election.
