Mark Zuckerberg’s personal wealth fell by nearly USD 7 billion in a few hours following an outage that took Facebook Inc.’s flagship products offline, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Zuckerberg took to YouTube in order to address people about what had gone wrong with Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

A selloff sent the social-media giant’s stock plummeting around 5% on Monday, adding to a drop of about 15% since mid-September.

Just one hour of worldwide Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp outages could result in more than USD 160 million in global losses, according to internet watchdog organization NetBlocks.

On his part, Mike Schroepfer, the chief technology officer (CTO), apologized to everyone impacted by the outages, affirming that they are working to restore as fast as possible.

Down Detector compiled nearly 124,000 reports of Facebook disruptions before and after 12 pm ET. The old network troubleshooting saying is, when anything goes wrong, "It's DNS."

This time Domain Name Server (DNS) appears to be the symptom of the root cause of the Facebook global failure. The true cause is that there are no working Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routes into Facebook's sites.

The platform tweeted: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Meanwhile, Instagram and WhatsApp are also down in a global outage. More than 20,000 WhatsApp users reported issues using the global instant messaging service from about 4 pm UK time, while a total of 12,144 reported issues with Instagram

“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products,” WhatsApp's spokesperson said. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Instagram also made an announcement, calling everyone to “Bear with us” as they are working on the problem.
