These days we are living in a very hot oven, no fans or air conditioners could ease the effects of the very high temperature. The heat wave has exceeded all limits, as temperatures exceeded 40 in Cairo, and approached 50 in Upper Egypt, and the power outage has hit again in a way we have not seen over the past 8 years, outage hours sometimes exceeded 6 continuous hours, especially in Upper Egypt and the Delta.
I do not absolve the government of responsibility. It should have taken into account this extreme rise in temperatures, but I notice and appreciate the great effort made by Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, also Dr. Mohamed Shaker, the Minister of Electricity, throughout the past years was able to develop the networks, and we didn't suffer from cut off even once, despite the increased loads. Certainly, there are other reasons that we read from time to time, such as the indebtedness of the Ministry of Electricity to the Ministry of Petroleum, or the lack of gas and the lack of diesel. I hope that we will find a solution to this problem that affects homes, hospitals, factories, and agriculture, and causes paralysis in all aspects of life.
Well, this wave of extreme heat did not come suddenly, as we all know that climate changes will raise the planet’s temperatures and that the major countries did not abide by their commitments. Egypt is one of the countries that have been severely affected by these changes, and I was hoping that the Minister of Environment would announce her plan to confront these changes and that a committee would be formed from the Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Environment, Electricity, the Meteorological Authority and all concerned authorities to discuss the extent to which we were affected by these changes and develop solutions to the crisis and how to confront it. The limate change not only affects electricity but the agricultural crops and their products, to water and its shortage, and many problems arising from climate change.
The wave continues until mid-September, according to the statements of the cabinet. The important thing is how do we face it? What do we do? And how do we act?
Is what was stated by Dr. Hani Al-Naqrashi, Advisor to the President of the Republic for Energy Affairs, true as he said that the daylight saving time, which was advised by foreigners, made the day long?, So use of air conditioners has increased. In fact, the use of lighting systems has decreased, but air conditioning consumes much more electricity. These are the words of Dr. Hani, who gave advice to the government to cancel daylight savings time immediately. Why we don't cancel daylight savings time?
