In a significant development, the Italian government has approved a draft law to ratify and implement a treaty facilitating the transfer of convicted individuals between Italy and Libya. This agreement enables Libyan nationals incarcerated in Italy to serve their remaining sentences in their home country.
The Italian news outlet "Italia Oggi" reported that on December 23, the Italian Council of Ministers, upon the proposal of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Antonio Tajani, endorsed the draft law concerning the ratification and execution of the treaty with Libya.
This decision follows discussions held in November between the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, and Italian Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, during Saleh's visit to Rome. The talks focused on the situation of Libyan prisoners in Italy and explored avenues for their repatriation.
Additionally, on December 17, Libya's Attorney General, Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, met with Italian judicial authorities in Rome to deliberate on resolving the issue of Libyan detainees and facilitating their return to Libya.
