Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Ahmed Aboul Gheit met with Ghada Waly, the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Cairo, to discuss enhancing cooperation.
The discussions focused on collaborative efforts between the two organizations, particularly on implementing the regional framework of action for the Arab countries (2023-2028) launched last year.
They also discussed areas of partnership, including combating drugs, organized crime, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, money laundering, and supporting the criminal justice system in Arab countries.
The impact of regional conflicts on support provided to member states was also addressed, emphasizing the importance of data and research in policy making. Reference was made to recent research publications from the UNODC, including "Drug Trafficking Dynamics Across Iraq and the Middle East (2019-2023): Trends" and the upcoming launch of the "World Drug Report" on June 26, 2024, coinciding with the "International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking" or "World Drug Control Day."
The meeting was part of the follow-up on recommendations from the first meeting of the Steering Committee and Follow-up of the Regional Program for the Arab States (2023-2028), highlighting the need to strengthen the partnership with the United Nations and its offices in implementing activities, programs, and projects within the regional framework of action.
