Swedish Cartoonist Lars Vilks, who stirred worldwide controversy due to a sketch of the Prophet Muhammad with a dog's body, was killed in a car crash, police announced on Monday.
The police revealed that the crash took place on Sunday near the southern town of Markaryd.
"This is a very tragic incident. It is now important to all of us that we do everything we can to investigate what happened and what caused the collision," Swedish police said in a statement. "Initially, there is nothing that points to anyone else being involved."
The police confirmed that Vilks was traveling in the car with two police protection officers when it was involved in an accident with a truck, Swedish news agency TT reported, adding that all three have died and the truck driver was injured.
In 2007, the Swedish artist drew a skitch depicting the Prophet Mohammad with the body of a dog, something with provoked anger among Muslims as they consider any depiction of the founder of Islam as offensive.
