Kirill Stremousov, the deputy head of the Kherson regional administration said a referendum will take place in Kherson, as part of a process that may pave the way for the region to join Russia.

“The referendum is scheduled for this year, the decision on this issue has been taken,” Stremousov told “Sputnik”.

“Today this is not a priority; the priority is to raise the social and economic development of the region, on which the well-being and quality of life of the population depend,” he added.

He continued, “We will do anything necessary to ensure that the residents of the Kherson region do not face any difficulties.”

Previously, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the Zaporozhye region’s military-civil administration  said that a referendum on the region joining Russia will be held this year. The preparations for it have begun and it will take several months

It is noteworthy that the Kherson region and part of Zaporozhye came under the control of the Russian armed forces during the Russian special operation in Ukraine.

The two regions’ authorities announced that they plan to join Russia.
