Following the fruitful outcomes of the Tripartite Summit held on October 10, 2024, in Asmara in the presence of the Presidents of Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration and Affairs of Egyptians Abroad of the Arab Republic of Egypt, extended an invitation to Mr. Osman Saleh Mohammed, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Eritrea, and Mr. Ahmed Madobe Fiqi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia, for the inaugural meeting of the Tripartite Joint Ministerial Committee.
This committee was formed according to the statement issued during the Asmara Summit.
The three ministers engaged in comprehensive discussions on the steps taken in accordance with the directives provided by the Presidents during the Asmara Summit.
Their focus was on enhancing security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region while preserving the unity and sovereignty of the countries within this region. Their actions are guided by the principles and provisions of international law and the tenet of non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
The ministers expressed their satisfaction with the progress made in strengthening cooperation among their nations to ensure security in Somalia. This includes the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and Somalia aimed at contributing to peacekeeping and reconstruction efforts there.
Egypt's involvement in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) was also highlighted.
Furthermore, the ministers deliberated on ways to bolster the capabilities of Somali state institutions. Their objective is to enable these institutions to effectively combat terrorism, establish state control over their entire territory, and enhance their ability to safeguard their land and maritime borders.
The ministers also shed light on the regional developments, particularly the situation in Sudan and its regional consequences, cooperation among Red Sea coastal states, and the security developments in Somalia.
They emphasized the importance of continued diplomatic coordination among the three countries. Dr. Badr Abdel Aty acknowledged the support of Eritrea and Somalia of the Egyptian candidate for the position of Director-General of UNESCO, Dr. Khaled El-Anani.
