The Japanese government announced Wednesday the start of negotiations with the United States in Washington on a cost-sharing agreement for Tokyo's hosting of US forces.
The two-day talks mark the beginning of full negotiations on the new Tokyo budget from April 2021 to host about 55,000 US military personnel stationed in Japan.
This comes within the framework of the bilateral security alliance, as it is scheduled to end The current five-year agreement next March.
The two sides said that the costs incurred by Japan played an important role in ensuring the smooth and efficient activities of US forces in the country. They stressed the importance of further strengthening the strong solidarity of the bilateral alliance.
According to statements released by the two governments, the two sides added that they are looking forward to mutually beneficial outcomes.
