Japan will provide humanitarian assistance worth €2 million to the US state of Hawaii.

The aid comes in response to the damages caused by recent forest fires on the island of Maui within the state.

According to the Japanese news agency Kyodo, Foreign Minister Yoshihisa Hagiwara conveyed Wednesday to reporters that the assistance will be delivered through the American Red Cross and the Tokyo-based non-profit organization "Japan Platform."

Concurrently, local authorities report a tragic toll of 106 fatalities resulting from the wildfires.

The forest fires broke out on August 8th across multiple locations on Maui and the neighboring island of Hawaii, which shares its name with the American state.

The small town of Lahaina on Maui, which had a population of 13,000 before the catastrophe, bore a particularly significant brunt of the impact.
