The amount of gold that makes up most of the World Cup has been estimated at $161,000, but the Cup as a whole has been valued at $20 million.
Officially, the World Cup is described as 75% gold. It measures 36.5 inches long and is made of 6.175 pounds or 30,875 carats of 18K gold. It measures 13cm in diameter and also features two green slices of malachite.
This estimate makes the FIFA World Cup trophy the most expensive sports trophy.
The winners of each edition of the World Cup receive a bronze replica of the trophy but are not allowed to keep the official copy. The bronze replica is at least gold-plated, though not entirely in yellow precious metal.
The original solid gold trophy is displayed at a Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, but it also tours the world for ceremonies and appearances at official events.
