This evening, Tuesday, unidentified gunmen assassinated one of the leaders of October demonstrations in Baghdad, the prominent activist Salah Al-Iraqi.

An Iraqi security source said, "Unidentified gunmen shot Al-Iraqi in the New Baghdad area," adding that "He died in Sheikh Zayed Hospital."

The source indicated that the gunmen were traveling in a "Sonata" car bearing a number plate in the name of Dohuk Governorate.

The prominent activist and protester in Baghdad, Muntazar Al-Zaidi, said through his official account on the Facebook: "The assassination of the activist Salah Al-Iraqi in the New Baghdad area came as a shock for all of us. May Allah bless his soul."

Al-Zaidi added, "He was killed within meters of the police checkpoint, and the killer led before them without moving."

Al-Zaidi continued, " May Allah forsakes the murderers and the country that cannot protect its people."

Last August, the government announced the killing of 560 demonstrators and security personnel during the protests in various cities in Iraq, including dozens of activists who were assassinated by unknown persons.
