Instagram issued its tradition of coping the best features from a mimicking Chinese upstart, TikTok. This feature is essentially similar to what TikTok offers by basically giving users the opportunity to shoot and edit short videos across the platform, and then choose appropriate music or audio clips and publish them to other users on the network, according to tech news.
According to a report from Techcrunch, Instagram is now testing a 'video remix feature' that allows users to take a 15-second video accompanied by music and then post that clip to their story.
Reels, rolled out on Tuesday as a test for Instagram users in Brazil and parrots a posting format that helped popularize TikTok which now rivals mainstays like Instagram and Snapchat in its ability to court younger users.
Instagram Releases New Features
The new feature was discovered by researcher Jane Manchun Wong who has a knack for finding tests inside major apps through reverse-engineering.
Noteworthy, TikTok is known in China as Douyin where it was launched in 2016 and then made more widely available around the world in 2017.
Later, Instagram added an option for users to report posts they think are false as the Facebook-owned photo-sharing site tries to stem misinformation and other abuses on its platform.
On other hand, Facebook has 54 fact-checking partners working in 42 languages, but the program on Instagram is only being rolled out in the United States.
It has largely been spared the scrutiny associated with its parent company, which is in the crosshairs of regulators over alleged Russian attempts to spread misinformation around the 2016 US presidential election.
