The Independent, a British daily newspaper, said that US scientists praised a historic step in the fight against Alzheimer's after a scientific team was able to develop a drug that slows down dementia (Alzheimer's disease) in clinical trials that were long overdue.
The newspaper pointed out that the achievement came after decades of failed attempts to find a way to do this, and led to hope among experts that it might eventually pave the way for treatments that could lead to a cure for the disease in the end.
The idea of the drug is based on an antibody treatment known as "lecanimab", which works to remove a toxic protein known as amyloid, which builds up in the brains of Alzheimer's patients and destroys the cells of the brain, leading to memory loss and communication problems associated with dementia.
On Tuesday evening, the results of the trial, which included nearly 1,800 people between the ages of 50 and 90, who were diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, were revealed in the US city of San Francisco and the New England Journal of Medicine.
