For his part, Major General Tarek Marzouq, Assistant Minister of Interior for the Prisons Sector, said that: “All prisons in Egypt are clear of Covid-19 cases.”

The assistant minister stressed that "We have a very serious responsibility to rehabilitate and reform those who have gone out of law in a way that makes them an active member of society."

In this regard, he said that all Covid-19 protective measures are being taken inside all prisons across Egypt including taking into consideration a one-meter, at least, the distance between the prisoner and his family during usual and exceptional visits.

“Each prisoner changes the mask every day. Also, when the prisoner moves from one place to another, he changes the mask, Marzouq affirmed.

In another context, he added that “we are facing a deliberate smear campaign to paint a different picture of prisons."
