Judge Nawaf Salam was officially named the prime minister after securing the necessary votes from Lebanese MPs, 85 votes out of 128, to form the first government under President Joseph Aoun.
The second round of parliamentary consultations took place on Monday at the Baabda Palace.
The competition was between former Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Salam, who headed the International Court of Justice, after MP Fouad Makhzoumi, who had the support of opposition blocs, withdrew in favor of Salam.
Salam was born in Beirut in 1953, and he is currently serving as the President of the International Court of Justice.
He was Lebanon’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations from July 2007 to December 2017.
He also represented Lebanon on the UN Security Council during the country’s non-permanent membership in 2010 and 2011.
He was the Vice President of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly from September 2012 to September 2013 and was Acting President of the Assembly in July 2013.
