The UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) has appointed Japanese judge Yuji Iwasawa as its new chairman, following the resignation of Nawaf Salam, who stepped down to assume the role of Lebanon’s prime minister.

Iwasawa, a distinguished expert in international law, was elected by his peers after Salam’s departure on January 14.

He will serve as chairman until February 5, 2027—the remainder of Salam’s original term.

A member of the ICJ since June 2018, Iwasawa previously held a professorship in international law at the University of Tokyo and chaired the UN Human Rights Committee.

His appointment reinforces Japan’s influence in global legal affairs and underscores his extensive expertise in international jurisprudence.
