The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that its experts at the Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine had received information that the evacuation of residents had begun from the nearby town of Innerhodar, where most of the station's employees live, stressing that its employees are closely monitoring the situation.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, expressed concern about the safety of the largest nuclear plant in Europe, located on the front line in the southern Ukrainian region, noting that the situation in the area near the Zaporizhia plant is unpredictable and potentially dangerous.
The evacuation comes in anticipation of a Ukrainian counter-attack, which is expected to be soon. While the workers of the nuclear facility will remain in their places
"We must act now to prevent the risk of a serious nuclear accident and its associated consequences for the population and the environment. This major nuclear facility must be protected," Grossi said.
The statement pointed out that the agency's experts have not been able to visit Inrhaudar in recent days, but they have received information about the situation regarding the evacuation in the town, and that it comes within the framework of a broader temporary evacuation in the region.
