Hungary Ready to Pay Russian Gas in Rubles

Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó affirmed that the country is ready to pay for Russian gas in rubles.

He noted that this is not a violation of the European sanctions regime against Moscow.

On Monday, Szijjártó said during a press conference that they have a solution that does not violate any sanctions, and at the same time guarantees the supply of gas to Hungary.

The minister indicated that Budapest plans to convert CEE Energy, a subsidiary of the Hungarian National Energy Company MVM, into the Russian bank "Gazprom Bank, which in turn will transfer the sun to the Russian ruble and send it to Gazprom Express.

Szijjártó stressed that Hungary depends heavily on oil and gas from Russia.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had said that the country is ready to pay for Russian gas in rubles after Moscow announced its decision in this regard.

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President considered that paying in rubles would be a violation of the Eoropean sanctions against Russia.
