Archaeologists from Egypt, Germany, and Austria have made significant discoveries in the tomb of Meret-Neith, located in the Um Al-Qaab archaeological site in Abydos, Sohag Governorate.

In his remarks, Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that the excavation team found many items in the tomb, including hundreds of large wine jars, some of which still had intact stoppers and preserved wine that was 5,000 years old.

In turn, Dietrich Raue, Director of the German Archaeological Institute, revealed that Queen Meret-Neith of the 1st dynasty had been in charge of central government offices, like the treasury, which proves the assumption that she played a historically significant role

She added that Meret-Neith’s monumental tomb complex in the desert of Abydos, which includes her own tomb as well as those of 41 courtiers and servants, was built of unfired mudbricks, mud, and timber.
