Honduras opened an embassy in China on Sunday, according to official Chinese media outlets.
The inauguration of the embassy in Beijing was confirmed by the Central China Television (CCTV), which reported that the foreign ministers of both countries officiated at the opening ceremony.
Earlier in the year, on March 26th, the Honduran government announced the termination of its decades-long diplomatic ties with Taiwan, drawing it closer to China, which is working to bolster its presence in Central America.
The Honduran Foreign Ministry tweeted at that time, "The Government of Honduras acknowledges the existence of only one China... The Government of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China."
The Ministry further clarified that Honduras had informed Taiwan of its decision to cut ties, and that it would not return to establishing any official relationship or contact with Taiwan.
On the other hand, Taiwan's Foreign Minister, Joseph Wu, announced that his country had severed diplomatic relations with Honduras and decided to close its embassy there.
He implied that the Honduran President, Xiomara Castro, was under "illusions" about China's promises to provide economic aid, adding that "China has been incessantly trying to allure Honduras with financial incentives."
