US Vice President Kamala Harris attacked the Supreme Court for overturning the Roe V Wade right that ended the abortion rights for women, Yahoo News reported on Sunday.
She described the decision of the court as "outrageous" and asserted that it was a serious matter.
During her participation at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans, Harris said: "This is a serious matter. It requires all of us to speak up, speak out and to be active."
She added: "We have to recognize we're a nation that was founded on certain principles that are grounded in the concept of freedom and liberty."
"We also know that we've had a history in this country of government trying to claim ownership over human bodies and we had supposedly evolved from that time and that way of thinking. So this is very problematic on so many levels," Harris concluded.
Two weeks ago, the US Supreme Court overturned its 50-year-old Roe V. Wade decision as millions of women will lose the right to abortion.
Various states across the nation will start imposing a ban on the procedure, and almost half of the states will introduce more restrictions.
On his side, President Joe Biden described the overturn as “a tragic error” and called all states to continue executing the right of abortion for women.
Biden directed the Health and Human Services Department to provide the medications and required measures to protect the right to travel to another state for an abortion.
