Haiti police revealed on Thursday that four suspected killers of President Jovenel Moïse were fatally shot, and two others were arrested.

AP reported, citing Haiti Police Chief Léon Charles, that three police officers who had been held hostage were freed in the incident.

Haiti’s Communications Secretary Frantz Exantus mentioned that the police had arrested Moïse's “presumed assassins” in an upscale neighborhood of Petionville, a suburb of the capital Port-au-Prince.

On Wednesday, Interim Premier Claude Joseph said a group of unidentified people attacked the president’s private residence late Tuesday, noting that some of the unidentified assailants spoke Spanish.

In press statements, he condemned the president’s killing as a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act.”

“The country’s security situation is under the control of the National Police of Haiti and the Armed Forces of Haiti,” he added. “Democracy and the republic will win.”

Moreover, the Interim Premier announced that the First Lady Martine Moïse is hospitalized after being shot.

In the same page, the United States denounced the “tragic attack” that killed Haiti’s president overnight.

“This is a tragic tragedy. It is a horrible crime,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki stressed in an interview with CNN.

Psaki expressed her solidarity with the people of Haiti, stating: “We support them and it is important that the people of Haiti know this.”
