Guterres Describes Destruction of Kakhovka Dam as Major Catastrophe

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the destruction of Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in Kherson, as a major humanitarian, economic and environmental catastrophe, stressing the need to stop attacks against civilians and vital civilian infrastructure.

According to the United Nations Information Center, Secretary-General of United Nations stressed the need to work to ensure accountability and respect for international humanitarian law, calling for a just peace in line with the United Nations Charter, international law and General Assembly resolutions.

Moreover, he stressed that the United Nations could not obtain independent information about the circumstances that led to the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.

"This is another devastating consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine," he continued.
