The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, condemned the Israeli plans to build more than 5,500 housing units in the occupied West Bank.
Guterres reaffirmed - according to a statement issued by the Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, that the settlements constitute a flagrant violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The Secretary-General again urges the Government of Israel to halt settlement expansion, immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied palestinian territories, and to fully respect its legal obligations in this regard.
He said that Israel's continued settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, deepens humanitarian needs, dramatically fuels violence, increases the risk of confrontation, and undermines the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
