Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said, Sunday, that Turkey is launching military operations in foreign lands, occupying parts of neighboring countries, stressing that Ankara cannot continue this way without sanctions.
Dendias called on Turkey to prove its intentions for dialogue, affirming that Athens wants a good-neighborly relationship with Ankara.
"We are open to constructive dialogue," he said.
This Greek alert comes after Turkey’s proceedings with energy explorations despite existing border disputes with Greece, and did not back down in a limited way, until it sensed the danger of imposing European sanctions.
“We have been in a crisis with Turkey for the last 18 months. Never before, at least since the change of government, have we had such a long period of constant tension,” the Greek FM stated.
“We do not have to face the Turkey of the past that aspired to join the EU and serve the same European values as all, but a country that is taking many quick steps backwards with neo-Ottoman tendencies,” he added.
On its part, Turkey continued to defy international law and norms, and went on challenging regional rights.
“Greece, as the spoiled child of Europe, intends to cause EU sanctions against Turkey based on its maximalist and illegal claims on the sea and air borders,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“ No sanctions will ever make Turkey compromise its sovereign rights in Kastelorizo or the 10 nautical miles of airspace.” The ministry added. “Greece should enter into an unconditional dialogue with Turkey as soon as possible,”
