The Greek minister of Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos revealed that Greece reached the brink of war with Turkey three times in 2020. Panagiotopoulos's statements came during his interview with the Greek Proto Thema.
He said, "Three times there was a universal mobilization of the Armed Forces,” against Turkey, adding, "In the summer I was on a prolonged vigil for many months. There were three general mobilizations of the Armed Forces."
"The Navy was at the center of this mobilization because it developed in the Eastern Mediterranean and came close to the Turkish Navy in many cases that we know of," the minister continued.
He asserted, "Our supreme sovereign right is to protect our national integrity and on this basis, we choose to have forces of legal and preventive defense on the islands."
He hinted that many "amendments" to the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement with the US are under way.
Greece and Turkey have resumed their talks regarding the rising tensions over maritime borders last month.
