On Thursday, Gianni Infantino was re-elected as president of FIFA until 2027, by acclamation, as there were no candidates against him, during the Federation’s General Assembly in Kigali.
Thus, the 52-year-old lawyer will lead the global governing body for football, for a third term by acclamation, similar to what happened 4 years ago as well, after he assumed his position in 2016 to succeed his compatriot Sepp Blatter.
In front of 211 delegates from member associations, Infantino said in the Rwandan capital, where the voting system did not record the number of dissenting votes, "I love you all."
If the statute of the federation provides for an end to three periods of 4 years each, Infantino is paving the way for staying until 2031, announcing in mid-December that he is still “in the first term,” considering that his first term (2016-2019) has not been completed.
Born on March 23, 1970 in Brigg, Switzerland, and married to Lebanese Lina Al-Ashqar, Infantino was Secretary-General of the International Center for Sports Studies, and worked as a consultant for several sports bodies in Italy, Spain and Switzerland before starting work with the European Union in August 2000 in the Department of Legal and Commercial Affairs.
He worked from 2004 to 2007 as head of the Legal Affairs Department, then as temporary Secretary-General with supervision of the Legal Affairs Department (2007-2009), and finally as Secretary-General since October 2009 during the Platini presidency.
