Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for an "enlarged and reformed" European Union that would be more "geopolitical" in outlook and actions.
Speaking to the European Parliament, Scholz mentioned that for that to happen the "European Union needs to change," adding "Europe must turn to the world."
He said the world is increasingly becoming multipolar, and Europe should look for more global cooperation on equal terms.
"Those who are nostalgic for the dream of European world power, those who serve national superpower fantasies, are stuck in the past," the Chancellor said.
This is in contrast to French President Emmanuel Macron who recently called for the European Union to become a global power.
However, he echoed some of the themes raised by Macron, saying that while "the United States remains Europe's most important ally," its continent will strengthen relations by investing more in security and defense, civil flexibility, technological sovereignty, reliable supply chains, and independence in critical raw materials.
