The German government not only abandoned its traditional pacifist foreign policy but began to consider the use of old nuclear-resistant bunkers.
Berlin is trying to pre-empt a nuclear war between Russia and the West by conducting a large inventory of the country's anti-nuclear shelters, according to AFP.
A large number of these shelters, close to 1,400, are spread in Germany, especially its western part; it had been abandoned and costly maintenance had stopped since 2007.
The German Interior Ministry said that the operations to dismantle the bunkers in the country will be reviewed, as Russia put its nuclear deterrent forces on alert and the attack on the Ukrainian nuclear power plant Zaporizhia.
The federal government in Germany decided to strengthen the means that were put in place to protect the population by rethinking special emergency protocols in the event of a nuclear attack and giving more importance to specialized authorities in managing this type of crisis.
