Upon an invitation from South Africa, the current chair of the African Union, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Irrigation of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia will hold a meeting tomorrow, Thursday, to discuss ways to reach a mechanism through which negotiations of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) could be resumed.

The GERD negotiations aim to reach a legally binding filling and operation agreement, according to a cabinet’s Statement on Tuesday.

Egypt’s minister of water resources and irrigation Dr. Mohamed Abdel Aty said on Tuesday that Egypt is willing to resume negotiations on GERD, noting that any agreement should preserve Egypt’s water rights.

“We seek a fair and legally binding agreement over the filling and operation of GERD,” the minister continued.
