Ambassador Hamdi Sanad Loza, Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Affairs received on Saturday Ambassador Donald Booth, the U.S. Special envoy to Sudan.
They discussed the latest developments regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis and the ongoing efforts to re-launch talks in order to reach an agreement on the filling and operation of the dam.
The Deputy Foreign Minister underlined the importance to reach a binding-legally deal on GERD as soon as possible, in order to ensure that Egypt and Sudan are not negatively affected by the second filling of the GERD.
He also reviewed the features of the Sudanese proposal supported by Egypt, calling for the formation of an international quartet led by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the participation of the United States (US), the European Union (EU), and the United Nations (UN) to mediate in GERD talks.
Moreover, the Egyptian official stressed the necessity of launching 'serious and effective' negotiations to maximize chances of success, in a way that enables the three countries to reach a fair, balanced, and legal deal that achieves their common interests, preserves Egypt's rights, and secures its water interests.
