The UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) announced that it will take approximately 15 years to clear the 40 million tonnes of war rubble in the Gaza Strip caused by the Israeli offensive.
The UN Environment Programme conducted the assessment and provided this estimate.
Furthermore, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) has reported that the cost of reconstructing Gaza has doubled from earlier projections, with ongoing expenses causing the estimate to increase daily.
In April, Pehr Lodhammar, a former chief of the United Nations Mine Action Service in Iraq, highlighted that 65% of the buildings destroyed in Gaza were residential.
He emphasized that the process of clearing and rebuilding these structures will be slow and hazardous due to the potential presence of unexploded shells, missiles, and other weapons buried within the rubble.
