A French member of the European Parliament called on his country to return the Statue of Liberty from the United States because it no longer represents the values that prompted France to gift it.
"Give us back the Statue of Liberty," center-left MP Raphaël Glucksmann said during a meeting of his left-wing movement. "We will say to the Americans who chose to stand with tyrants and to the Americans who dismissed researchers for demanding scientific freedom: Give us back the Statue of Liberty."
He continued, "We gave it to you as a gift, but it seems you despise it, so it would be fitting that it be here in its homeland."
The Statue of Liberty was unveiled in New York on October 28, 1886, to mark the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence. It was a gift from the French people to America. It was designed by the Frenchman Auguste Bartholdi.
