The former Jordanian Crown Prince, Prince Hamzah bin Al Hussein, announced the relinquishment of his royal title, in an unprecedented move within the Hashemite family, a month after he submitted a letter of apology addressed to his older brother, King Abdullah II of Jordan.
In the text of a message he posted on his Twitter account, the emir attributed the reasons for abandoning the title, saying that “the summary of my personal convictions is not in line with the approaches, trends and modern methods of our institutions.”
He added that “out of honesty, I see nothing but abandoning the title of emir.”
The Jordanian Royal Family Law does not provide princes the tight for requesting the renunciation of titles.
Only the king has the right to grant these titles to family members and withdraw them from them.
