Spanish midfielder, former Barcelona icon, and Inter Miami star Sergio Busquets announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.
Busquets confirmed in a video posted on social media that he will hang up his boots at the end of the current Major League Soccer season.
“These will be my final months on the pitch. I retire very happy, proud, satisfied, and above all, grateful,” he said.
Reflecting on his two-decade career, Busquets added: “I feel the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer.
It has been nearly 20 years of enjoying this wonderful story I always dreamed of, unique experiences, in amazing places, alongside the best companions.”
In his farewell, he paid tribute to Barcelona, the club where he spent 15 years and rose to global prominence: “Thank you to FC Barcelona, the club of my life, where I fulfilled my childhood dreams, wore the shirt I loved for hundreds of matches, celebrated many titles, and lived unforgettable moments at Camp Nou.”
With his retirement, Busquets becomes the last to step away from the game among Barcelona’s iconic midfield trio alongside Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta.
Together, the three redefined the role of the midfield, playing side by side for seven seasons, amassing more than 2000 appearances and winning 21 major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles.
