Foreign Minister (FM) Sameh Shoukry received on Tuesday, Sven Koopmans, the European Union (EU) envoy for the Middle East peace process.

During their meeting, Shoukry reviewed the recent developments in the Palestinian-Israeli arena, and the increasing pace of violence that threatens to get the situation out of control, warning of the serious repercussions of the continued escalation on security and stability in the region, and the chances of achieving a two-state solution.

In this regard, FM called for the need to calm the situation on the ground, and for Israel to stop taking unilateral measures that would increase the state of tension among the Palestinian people, noting that this will have a direct impact on creating the appropriate climate for the resumption of negotiations and the return of hope for peace, as well as achieving a comprehensive and just peace based on the two-state solution, in accordance with the decisions of international legitimacy.

Moreover, Egypt's top diplomat stressed the key role that the international partners, led by the European Union (EU), can play to put an end to the current tension, stop the violations and attacks against the Palestinians, and encourage the parties to return to negotiations.
