On Friday, Chines authorities revealed that at least 21 people died as heavy downpours and flash floods struck central China’s Hubei province this week.

According to a statement released by state broadcaster Xinhua, Hubei's officials said: “Twenty-one people were killed and four others are missing as heavy rain lashed townships from Wednesday.”

In a video, many families can be seen wading in water that rose on Friday to almost hip level and carrying essentials in plastic bags in Yicheng.

In Hubei, torrential rains caused power cuts and landslides, demolishing hundreds of homes and forcing the evacuation of nearly 6,000 people, the province’s Emergency Management Bureau reported on early Friday.

Lately, China's cities have been battered by unprecedented rains in the recent months, extreme weather that forecast experts say is increasingly common due to global warming.
