A car hit a number of pedestrians in Trier, Germany on Tuesday. The police said that at least five dead and others were injured due to the incident.
A nine-month baby was among the reported deaths due to the accident as the police reported.
The car driver was arrested. He is a 51-year-old German national. He will be prosecuted for murder and manslaughter, police said according to CNN.
The chief public prosecutor said the driver was "severely intoxicated" with a blood alcohol level of 1.4. Also, there are "indications of psychological illness," CNN mentioned.
Trier police said the motive was unknown; the suspect has no police record and his background shows an indication of political motivation.
In the same context, Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe expressed his wonders, "We always see those images on TV, in other countries, and we always think this can't happen in Trier. And now it has happened in Trier, and I am here as mayor, and I have no words and I wonder, how can such a man have this idea?"
The initial investigations didn't indicate the real motive of the murder. On the other hand, the motive didn't seem a terroristic or political one.
It is worthy to mention that Europe lately witnessed a number of tragic accidents including the terror attack in Osteria, and slay incident in France.
