According to a Reuters witness, a significant development occurred today as the first ship successfully navigated the Ukrainian corridor in the Black Sea and passed through Turkey's Bosphorus Strait.
The container vessel named "Joseph Schult," registered under the flag of Hong Kong, departed from the Ukrainian port of Odessa, which had recently been under siege by Russia. Interestingly, the ship had been stationed at the port since February 23, 2022, a day prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Last week, Ukraine gained attention by announcing the establishment of a "humanitarian corridor" in the Black Sea. This corridor aimed to facilitate the departure of cargo ships that were stranded in Ukrainian ports following the conclusion of a grain export agreement last month.
The response from Moscow regarding the honoring of this shipping corridor remains undisclosed. Concerns about the safety of the passage have been raised by sources in the shipping and insurance industries.
The Ukrainian authorities have emphasized that the primary purpose of the corridor is to aid ships that are stranded in Ukrainian harbors.
Local media outlets have reported that the vessel is expected to dock at the Ambarlı port, situated south of Istanbul.
