Finnish Parliament: MPs' Emails Hacked

The Finnish Parliament announced on Wednesday that a cyber-attack took place and the hackers gained entry to its internal IT system and accessed email accounts of some members of Parliament (MPs).

According to Government officials, the attack took place in the fall of 2020 and was discovered this month by the Parliament's IT staff. The matter is currently being investigated by the Finnish Central Criminal Police (KRP).

"This case is exceptional in Finland, serious due to the quality of the target and unfortunate for the victims," the officials added.

On other hand, the commissioner Tero Muurman revealing that there is a possibility that unknown actors have been able to obtain information through the hacking, either for the benefit of a foreign state or to harm Finland.

Moreover, the cyber strike on parliament is a serious attack on our democracy and on Finnish society, the speaker of Finland's parliament Anu Vehvilainen reported

"We must make every effort to ensure a high level of security in both the public and private sectors," Vehvilainen added. Noteworthy, Finland has seen a number of service attacks on state bodies in recent years, closing down websites for several hours, which this breach was of particular concern.
