Qu Denyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), said that feeding a growing number of the world's population by producing more at a lower cost is a major challenge due to the increasing chronic and acute food insecurity.
Denyu added that economic hardship, supply chain disruptions, and conflicts create obstacles to the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food.
Extreme weather events such as heavy rains, storms, hurricanes, floods, and droughts are also important indicators of food insecurity in all regions.
He added that the challenges were exacerbated by the high prices of food, fuel, and fertilizers, as well as the deterioration of purchasing power.
FAO has developed two important strategies over the past two years to deal with challenges related to climate change and to use innovative technologies to increase food production in the world.
