In a recent development, the European Parliament has initiated efforts to collect signatures aimed at limiting Hungary's voting rights within the European Union Council. This move comes in response to statements made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán previously announced that Hungary would obstruct a proposal to begin talks regarding Ukraine's membership in the European Union at the upcoming summit of the bloc's leaders. He added that recognizing Ukraine could have unforeseen consequences for the EU.
The European Parliament has reached an agreement on five new regulations concerning the legal frameworks of the European Union in dealing with asylum and immigration comprehensively.
The new regulations, approved by both the Council and the European Parliament under the Spanish Presidency, cover all stages of asylum and immigration management. This includes examining illegal immigrants upon their arrival in EU countries, collecting biometric data, processing asylum applications, immigration rules, determining the member state responsible for handling the asylum request, and cooperation and solidarity among member states in dealing with crisis situations, including cases of migrant exploitation.
