The Football Supporters Europe (FSE) organization has urged Serie A officials to abandon plans to hold an Italian league match outside the country, following the Spanish La Liga’s recent decision to scrap its proposed fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami, USA.

La Liga announced last week that it was withdrawing from the idea of hosting the December match abroad, after widespread opposition from fans and players, who viewed the move as a threat to the identity of domestic competitions.

A Serie A spokesperson declined to comment on the matter but confirmed that plans are still under review, with official approval pending for a potential AC Milan vs. Como match in Australia, scheduled for February 2026.

The European Fans’ Association welcomed La Liga’s reversal, stating in an official release: “The language of reason and the true spirit of the game have finally prevailed. This is a major victory for European football and for everyone who believes the sport is an integral part of local communities.”

The statement further urged Italian football authorities to follow suit: “Defeating La Liga’s plan sends a clear message to the football world, such ill-considered projects are doomed to fail. It’s time for Serie A to back down as well.”

The organization concluded: “Serie A must act responsibly and withdraw its proposal to stage matches abroad. It’s not too late to do the right thing.”
