The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the European Union (EU) in Egypt, a number of ministries and department partners concluded the EU Support to Egypt's National Population Strategy project in an event on Tuesday.

“With the support of an EU-grant of 27 million Euros, UNFPA lead the implementation of the 5-year project in Partnership with the Ministry of Health and Population, other line ministries and civil society organizations,” UNFPA said in a statement.

The project interventions were implemented in all 27 governorates aiming at increasing the use of voluntary, rights-based family planning, and enhanced governance for implementation of the National Population Strategy.

The closing event saw the attendance of Minister of International Cooperation Dr. Rania Al Mashat, Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Head of the EU Delegation to Egypt Christian Berger, and UNFPA Representative in Egypt Frederika Meijer, among other partners and stakeholders.

The Ministry of International Cooperation officially launched the project in 2018, with UNFPA, the EU, the Ministry of Health and Population and the National Population Council.

Meijer said: “Under the project, UNFPA worked closely with partners from different sectors, with a multi-pronged approach for promoting voluntary family planning and improving reproductive health issues.”

She added: “We must keep the momentum of the past five years in order to reach our 2030 goals.”

In turn, the EU Ambassador said: “The project worked to scale up family planning services including capacity building of healthcare providers, improving supply of contraceptives and making them more accessible to the Egyptian population of reproductive age.”

He continued: “It also worked to educate people on family planning and increase public awareness about making informed choices about family planning.”

Berger also affirmed that the project employed innovative communication approaches as a part of the 360-degree comprehensive communication campaign.
